Prioritizing requirements

Prioritization is a decision process, not a label attached by one person. Visible criteria create shared language, while strategy, evidence, feasibility, dependencies, and risk determine what should be delivered first.

01 · CORE LESSON

Build the mental model.

Turn competing needs into a transparent order for delivering business and user value.

Before scoring items, agree what matters. Criteria might include strategic alignment, user impact, revenue, cost avoidance, compliance, urgency, risk reduction, confidence, effort, and dependencies.

  • Make criteria and weights visible before reviewing features.
  • Use the same evidence standard across competing requests.
  • Separate urgency from importance.

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE05

Prioritizing a marketplace MVP

Sales requests chat, users struggle with identity verification, and operations needs export tooling.

  1. 1

Agree MVP success measures and scoring criteria.

  2. 2

Estimate reach, risk reduction, confidence, and effort with relevant teams.

  3. 3

Map mandatory dependencies and compliance needs.

  4. 4

Prioritize verification first, basic export second, and defer chat pending evidence.

OUTCOME

The team protects the core transaction journey and operational readiness rather than following the loudest request.
